To become a skipper and take charge of your boat and crew is a significant step. You become responsible for the safety and well being of both the boat and your crew. It is important that you are properly trained. From our extensive experience when your training is delivered over an extended period of time with low student instructor ratios, your level of competency will be well in excess of the standard 5 day RYA course.

RYA Day Skipper and Competent Crew Courses — Lymington Yacht Haven

Are courses run Monday to Friday.
The 5 day Day Skipper and Competent Crew Courses cost £549 per person (plus 15% discount for FlexiSail members). and all breakfasts, lunches, snacks and drinks are included.
For the Day Skipper course you should ideally have already done the theory by the time you start, but we will accept those who have the theory well underway. No theory is required for the Competent Crew Course. On satisfactory completion of the course you will receive your RYA Competence Crew or Day Skipper Certificate, more details below.

The Coastal and Yachtmaster competency exams are a completely un-biased test of your sailing and skippering ability, conducted by an external RYA examiner. At Solent Nautical College we encourage a bespoke process of progressing your sailing skills. Our progressive and logical teaching methods gives you the full understanding of your skill level and style. Using sophisticated team building, Crew Resource Management and training techniques we give you the opportunity to reach your full potential on the water.
As a Coastal skipper with SNC you will have:-
- The confidence and knowledge to skipper long cruising passages
- Sail trim techniques to handle your yacht in a wide variety of conditions
- Conducted sail manoeuvres in confined waters
- Handled a sail boat under power in difficult conditions and confined marinas
- Mastered practical navigation skills without a GPS
- Completed night sailing passages
- Successfully undertaken sailing drills including engine failure and MOB, engine failure under pilotage, medical emergencies
As a Yachtmaster with SNC you will have:-
- All the skills as per Coastal Skipper, but to a higher standard
- The confidence to skipper with complete novices
- The skills to sail and undertake emergency drills at night
- The ability to navigate in confined waters and reduced visibility

One-Day RYA Sea Survival Course — New Milton Pool
- Saturday 15th October
Following our successful course run in July at New Milton Pool. The instructor is Richard Morley who has over 22 years boating experience, he is a Yachtmaster instructor and has many shore based instructor qualifications (details of the course are attached). The cost, to include the RYA Sea Survival course book and the certificate, is £109 per person (plus 15% discount for FlexiSail members). As the course will be limited to 10 candidates, we will treat the bookings on a first come first served basis. So, if you are interested in this very valuable course, please let us know as soon as you can.
One-Day RYA Diesel Engine Maintenance Course — Lymington
- Sunday 20th November
The diesel engine maintenance course is to be run on Sunday 24th October at the Lymington Community Centre with Ray Scott. The cost will include a certificate and is £99 per person (15% discount for FlexiSail members). The course is again limited to 10 candidates and the bookings will be on a first come first served basis.
One-Day RYA VHF Courses — Lymington Town Sailing Club
- Saturday 1st October
- Saturday 19th November
This one day course is a compulsory licence for all of you who want to use a VHF. It is a course requirement for a coastal or Yachtmaster ticket. The instructor is the vastly experienced Robin Pratt who is based at the Lymington Town Sailing Club and the venue has just been refurbished with one radio set for two users (details of the course are attached). The cost, which includes a certificate, is £99 per person (15% discount for FlexiSail members). There is further £30 to pay for your licence on successful completion of the course. The course is limited to 8 candidates and we will treat the bookings on a first come first served basis.
One- Day RYA First Aid certificate – Lymington Community Centre
- Sunday 16th October
This course focuses on a working knowledge of first aid for all those who go afloat. It is a requirement for a Coastal or Yachtmaster ticket. The certificate is valid for 3 years and is peace of mind for you to handle those unforeseen circumstances. The instructor is Chris Reynolds and the venue is at our popular Lymington community centre. The cost is £109 per person (15% discount for FlexiSail members). We limit this course to 10 candidates and is on a first come first served basis, so please let us know as soon as you can.
Ladies weekend – FlexiSail members only — Lymington
- 1st – 2nd June 2011
This is an excellent opportunity for ladies to practice their skills, in a different environment. The cost will be £180 per person which includes breakfast, lunches, snacks, but not the evening meal. We will be paying for the charter of the yacht, instruction, mooring fees, and fuel.

Course Information
The RYA Competent Crew Course (Sail or Power)
Basic seamanship and helmsmanship.
This course is for beginners and those who would like to become active crew members rather than just passengers. By the end of the course you should be able to steer, handle sails, keep a lookout, row a dinghy and assist in all the day to day routines on board.
The minimum duration is 5 days, taken as a 5 day course or over 3 x 2 days or 3 days plus 2 days. If you have previously completed the Start Yachting course, the Competent Crew course can be completed in 3 or 4 days.
Power course training is carried out and certified through a partnership with a local power training school
The RYA Day Skipper Course (Sail or Power)
Pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and navigation.
This five day course gives you the chance to take charge on short passages under instruction. You will concentrate on pilotage, boat handling, seamanship and navigation. The course can be taken in tidal waters and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly.
You should already have a basic knowledge of navigation and helmsmanship. It is advisable that you take the Day Skipper shore-based course before attending this practical course. It is recommended that you have already sailed with others for 5 days, 100 miles, including 4 night hours onboard a boat.
By the end of the course you should be able to competently skipper a small boat in familiar waters by day.
The minimum duration for Sail is 5 days, taken as a 5 day course or as a 3 x 2 days or 3 days plus 2 days. The minumum duration for Power is 4 days, taken as a 4 day course or as a 2 x 2 days.
Power course training is carried out and certified through a partnership with a local power training school
International Certificate of Competence (ICC)
This examination is completed in one day as part of your own boat tuition. Depending upon your existing experience, the ICC is taken after a one or two day preparation course.
The RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Skipper Course (Sail or Power)
Passage planning, pilotage by day and night, boat handling, safety and emergency situations.
This is a five-day advanced skippering course for those who have considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation, and want to undertake coastal passages by day and night. Each trainee will skipper more challenging passages and learn more about passage planning, pilotage by day and night, boat handling, safety and emergency situations. The course will be taken in tidal waters and your certificate will be endorsed accordingly.
You should already be comfortable with boat handling to the standard of the Day Skipper practical sail cruising course and have navigation to the standard of the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster shorebased course.
On satisfactory completion of the course you will receive the RYA Coastal Course Completion Certification. The RYA Yachtmaster Coastal Certificate of Competence is only available by examination by an RYA Examiner for which a 6th day is usually required.
By the end of the course you should be able to skipper a yacht on coastal passages by day and night.
The minimum duration is 5 days usually taken as 5 continuous days, followed by a 6th day if you are taking the exam.
Power course training is carried out and certified through a partnership with a local power training school
The RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Exam Preparation (Sail or Power)
There are many ways to achieve this level, much depending upon your time commitments. We believe that this is not something to be rushed, but by joining our unique integrated training and sailing programme we will take you through the various stages at your own pace, ensuring that you achieve your Yachtmaster certification, but equally important you are a highly competent, safe and knowledgeable Yachtmaster that others will have every confidence in.
The RYAYachtmaster Offshore Certificate of Competence is by examination and usually requires a 6th day.
Power course training is carried out and certified through a partnership with a local power training school
Own Boat Tuition
Whether buying your own boat and requiring a familiarization period of instruction to give you the skill and confidence to handle the boat properly, or needing to obtain an ICC for insurance or chartering purposes, or would like to do YM preparation and examination on your boat, we are able to assist. Workshops
These are a great opportunity to hone the skills that you know you would benefit from instruction and practise. Whether it is Man Over Board, Rigs & Rigging, Sail Repairs, Sail Trimming, Ferry Gliding, Anchoring, Night Sailing, Port Entry, Navigation, Electronics on board,VHF, etc., we run these workshops throughout the year.
